So just a few more weeks and my first year fresher life will be up and I’ll be going on Summer break and coming back a second year student! My life as a fresher has had its good points and its bad points and its damn well ugly points! So I was thinking what things do I wish I had known before I came to University last September? Well…
Loans and Overdrafts run out VERY quick, It’s all cool when you look into your bank balance and you see a shining beautiful sum of cash within the thousands, but believe me that runs out faster than you can blink. I discussed this a lot of the time with my friends about where our money goes when we have nothing and everyone says roughly the same thing ‘I don’t even know what it got spent on?!?!’ Many times have I withdrawn £20 and the next day it’s all gone and all I have to show for it is a packet of crisps and a basic shop? I’m not sure if there is a magical Uni overdraft stealing fairy but I wish I listened to people who warned me before I came that money goes so quickly.
Pre-meeting your flatmates helps A LOT! I only met one flat mate before I moved in and we met over Facebook, but now looking back to it everyone had already met everyone by the time they got to Uni so I felt like that’s probably something I should have thought about before hand.
I will be kissing goodbye the luxuries I enjoyed everyday. Now looking back I wish I didn’t take things like sweets, magazines and such for granted because now I rarely get a chance to get them because I’m so broke.
Bring extra cutlery. It’s not cool when you have someone over for dinner and you only have one set of cutlery and one plate…Awkward. Plus a lot of the time people either take/steal or ‘borrow’ your kitchen ware which can get annoying as most of it never actually returns! When I first came to University we only packed like one plate, few bowls and cups and couple knives and forks but by the end of my second semester I had like one plate left in my possession. BUY EXTRA!
Today I had my hospital appointment at 9am so I was awake really early (Something that I was only really used to back at home- now I’m just lazy), I didn’t get much sleep either so being tired made me feel horrid! Because I was up early it meant that I started my day early as well which was nice because today was warm and spring like 🙂 (Pictures at the bottom!)
After the hospital we walked all the way home which is like a 30 minute walk and then we decided that we would go on a little country walk since the weather was really nice and we had found a walking route. We started our adventure promptly, walking towards the opening of the forest walkway it looked something similar to a horror movie even despite the blissful sun, but we carried on because we were aiming to get to a beautiful viewing spot where you can see the whole city skyline! We walked for a good 20 minutes up hill through the countryside farms until we reached a field of horses which is where I saw my first baby foal in real life – It was uber cute! Being pretty tired we stopped to take photos and admire the horses when they suddenly decided to go on a rampage and get all protective so we left quite quickly because I got scared one might jump over the fence! (I’m a big chicken)
Sometime after this we finally reached the peak of the hill and we got a beautiful view of the Leeds city skyline which is really something 🙂 My partner made a joke about the lack of skyscrapers in Leeds and it went something like this ‘There’s hardly any skyscrapers, if spider man was swinging through the city he wouldn’t get anywhere’ which made me laugh :’)
We took lots of photos and made our way back home, we were both relieved to be able to rest and I had a good 6 hour nap to replenish my tired self 🙂 Sadly I’m back at uni tomorrow for lectures/seminars but what can you do… 😦 Nearly home for Summer though just got a few more weeks to go and then I’ll be blogging about my summer at home in North London which should be exciting and different! 😀
I hope you all had a nice day, follow follow follow 🙂 See you tomorrow!
So this is my very first post on my new blog, Firstly to start my name is Mary and if you’ve had a quick look at my About me you’ll know I attend University. It’s been exactly around 7 months since I started University and waiting on UCAS to tell me whether or not I got in seems like a far thing of the past.
Time really flies when I’m at University everything seems to go by so fast, these months are dwindling and soon I’ll be in my second year hopefully. I’m currently studying English and History BA joint but I was very fussy in Sixth form constantly changing my degree choice, I couldn’t decide where I wanted my degree to take me or what path to choose. Eventually after a month or so of being at University I decided to write some articles for my University’s online newspaper given some encouragement from my partner, turns out that I find enjoyment out of writing articles and ever since my first one was published I have written more and taken a greater interest in journalism side of things, so now my future seems to be leading me down the path of being a journalist which is exciting!
University is different, many people will tell you before you come that it is a massive step in your life and they’re not wrong- it is. It can be a bit daunting for some people like myself, I found it very hard for the first two months because I’m a very shy reserved and quiet girl, but once you’re settled you will find it not so bad. You’ll meet some people that take University in their prime and spend 95% of their time in the clubs, pubs or other nightlife spots because they’re high on freedom and some other concoctions, but you’ll also meet the people on the other side of the spectrum that take their degree seriously and put in the overtime, you’ll also meet people who are homesick a lot of the time and question as to why they came to University in the first place and you’ll meet people who just drive you insane but that’s just what happens- All in all University isn’t so bad.
Well that’s my little snippet on what University is like and it was my first post, so I hope you enjoyed! 🙂
