So just a few more weeks and my first year fresher life will be up and I’ll be going on Summer break and coming back a second year student! My life as a fresher has had its good points and its bad points and its damn well ugly points! So I was thinking what things do I wish I had known before I came to University last September? Well…
Loans and Overdrafts run out VERY quick, It’s all cool when you look into your bank balance and you see a shining beautiful sum of cash within the thousands, but believe me that runs out faster than you can blink. I discussed this a lot of the time with my friends about where our money goes when we have nothing and everyone says roughly the same thing ‘I don’t even know what it got spent on?!?!’ Many times have I withdrawn £20 and the next day it’s all gone and all I have to show for it is a packet of crisps and a basic shop? I’m not sure if there is a magical Uni overdraft stealing fairy but I wish I listened to people who warned me before I came that money goes so quickly.
Pre-meeting your flatmates helps A LOT! I only met one flat mate before I moved in and we met over Facebook, but now looking back to it everyone had already met everyone by the time they got to Uni so I felt like that’s probably something I should have thought about before hand.
I will be kissing goodbye the luxuries I enjoyed everyday. Now looking back I wish I didn’t take things like sweets, magazines and such for granted because now I rarely get a chance to get them because I’m so broke.
Bring extra cutlery. It’s not cool when you have someone over for dinner and you only have one set of cutlery and one plate…Awkward. Plus a lot of the time people either take/steal or ‘borrow’ your kitchen ware which can get annoying as most of it never actually returns! When I first came to University we only packed like one plate, few bowls and cups and couple knives and forks but by the end of my second semester I had like one plate left in my possession. BUY EXTRA!
Everybody loves watching TV right? Or maybe you don’t…Anyway I love watching certain soaps, drama’s and TV series and I thought I would share my favourite ones with you guys!
Okay so here’s my top 5 favourite list:
Hollyoaks – British soap that usually is on either Channel 4 or 4+ but I tend to watch it on 4od which is catch up only because at my halls there is no TV so I have to watch things on catch up 😦 The cast are all mostly crazy or weird but that’s what makes it interesting to watch, there’s also a high frequent amount of deaths and murders, cheating and general craziness in the show.
Eastenders – Another British soap based on a square in London, long story short no one lives a happy normal life in Eastenders and there is ALWAYS some sort of crazy out of the blue drama but that’s why I watch it 🙂
Ugly Betty – I love this! Even when the season 4 ended I still went back to season 1 to watch it all over again and I probably will purchase the box set soon as well. I’m sad that there’s no season 5 because I got really into but it’s still an all time favourite anyway! I think this was a big hit with many because most people sympathized with Betty and loved to see her battle her way through the fashion industry with her crazy dress sense and colleagues.
Suburgatory – This is a relatively recent one that I started watching just before I came to university and I still love it now. It’s about a girl who moves from Manhattan wit her dad to a suburban town called Chatswin. I love the craziness of the town and all the characters as well, definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it!
Family Guy/American Dad/Simpsons – Okay so I cheated a little and put these three into one category, but there sort of the same thing anyway so I thought you wouldn’t mind! I love these because I love animated comedies, I also like most of the humor in them as well, I love the special episodes the Simpsons do on occasions such as Halloween and I love American Dad and Family Guy bevause of the characters as well. So these definitely make it on the list.
So now you know my fav TV shows you’ll know what I’m gonna be watching later haha 🙂
Procrastination? Something that many students in years 10, 11, A levels and all the way to University will either proudly admit to doing or live in denial about doing it and actually do it. It’s so easy to forget you have to revise for GCSE’s or hand in a 2000 word essay on your last lecture the next morning but we all do it at some point right? I always find myself watching episodes of Hollyoaks or Eastenders, painting my nails, tweeting or scanning Facebook and then being like ‘CRAP!’ when I remember the list of tasks I have to complete, So! I am trying hard to not procrastinate this last semester of my first year of University – Not going as well as planned.
Anyway today I overslept but I didn’t mind because I had no lectures/seminars (Phew!) woke up around 4:30pm (Terrible I know but makes a change from getting up at the crack of dawn) and me and my partner decided we would go to the cinema and see Scary Movie 5, when we got to the city centre we grabbed some dinner at Nando’s in the new Trinity centre, give me chicken strip wraps with mayo and chips from Nando’s anyday! (Hold the chilli jam, I’m not a fan). We then ran in the rain to the cinema which was just down the road and got our tickets and some Ben & Jerry’s core ice cream, for anyone who doesn’t know what a Ben and Jerry’s core ice cream is it’s basically where they let you choose two flavours of ice cream then add toffee or chocolate sauce, whipped cream and chocolate drops on top…I know sounds like a sugar overload right? 🙂 Anyway Scary Movie 5 was alright, not amazing but still quite funny so go watch if that’s your sort of film!
One thing I love about sharing flats in halls at University is the fact you can pull pranks and no one will know it was you when there’s 4 or 5 other suspects as well haha! So when we got in we took all the kitchen chairs and in the hallway in awkward positions so people couldn’t get past, little childish but was fun. I can’t wait for second year though when we have our on apartment! Plus It’ll be nice to start the year fresh 🙂
Anyway hope you’re all okay! Like and follow 🙂 (Photos below!)
So I am blogging late again today, which is not a habit that I want to get into as I quite like blogging early as it clears up the rest of the evening for me to do whatever I want and to relax 🙂 So I need to break this habit and I will – Promise! 🙂
Again to no surprise I got no sleep last night, my room is like the arctic and my flatmate was persistent in staying up till the early hours of the morning playing loud movies in his room. I cant wait until July when me and my partner move into our new apartment for our 2nd year at uni, it’s perfect and in the ideal location – win! There are many advantages to getting your own place in 2nd year that I’m really looking forward to and that’s:
Not having to clean up after lazy people.
Being able to use the oven when and for as long as I want to (Means more cakes I can bake!)
No awkward encounters with people when going to the communal areas.
No more loud parties or drunken people waking us all up at like 6 am (I know I’m a student but there’s limits!)
Feeling like an adult! 😀
Well so now you know I’m rather excited to get into our apartment but it’s quite a wait still for the time being, so i’ll update you closer to the time! Anyway tonight we ordered some take away with the remainder of my £10 lottery win and it was 2 hours late!! after about four phone calls to the shop they explained it was because the drivers phone died so he returned to the shop to charge it (WHAT?!) and then the driver rung us and said he was lost…LOST?! We have the clearest sign right outside the gate…but anyway the food was ice cold and we said we wasn’t going to pay the full price and he said that’s fine but then conned us out of our money anyway and said he had no change so we had to pay full price – Lesson learned.
Other than that my days been not to bad; I got to write some new articles for two amazing websites, had a long nice long distance phone conversation with my sister and niece and caught up on Hollyoaks and my other favourite soaps!
Hope you all had lovely days, sorry for blogging so late! 🙂 See you tomorrow! (Below is a picture of what my take away food probably should have looked like…)
